Kummituslik maa / The haunting land

Hardangervidda rahvuspark, mountain plateau
Selgitan talle, et just seepärast ma siin praegu olengi – "Treenin Gröönimaa jaoks." Järgneb naeratus ja...: "Sel juhul õnn kaasa sulle! Kaalu hoolega, kust järvi ületad, sest kohati on jää habras!" - Nii algas minu suusaretk.

See on suurim mägiplatoo Euroopas, hõlmates 6500 km2 suuruse ala keskmise kõrgusega 1100 meetrit merepinnast. Peale kõige on tegemist Norra suurima rahvuspargiga – see on Hardangervidda!

On the second day after starting in the darkness I come across the ranger on snowmobile...the last person before 3 weeks of solitude. He is studying me and asks, am I really aware what I am going to do. "We have February here, not much daylight yet, besides it’s the month of cold and whiteout," he seems to try change my mind. "This time of the season there is very few people around, most of them are coming end of March with sunny days." I explain him, that exactly that’s the reason why I am here now – I am training for Greenland. Kind smile comes next and...: "In that case, Good luck for you! But pay attention when it comes to cross the lakes, because in some places ice is still fragile!" - That's how my ski trip started.

It is the largest mountain plateau in Europe, covering the area of 6500 km2 with an average of 1100 meters above sea level. Here, above the tree line, is typical alpine climate with arctic species of flora and fauna. The vast territory without permanent human settlement is wild and untouched. If you would place someone in the middle of this plateau, the one would guess that this is a polar region. After all, it is the largest national park in Norway – this is Hardangervidda!

In history Hardangervidda has been favored training places for those, who prepare for polar expeditions (among others such a great names like Nansen and Amundsen). Particularly in winter time, it’s lonely and wild place. Many visitors have been talked about spirits, who live around out there. Something or someone, what you really cannot explain, but you feel it! Even Roald Amundsen (one of the greatest polar explorers), who by the way wasn’t superstitious, felt something strange out there after being several times in real danger and had forced to pull back.

Who knows, but similar things happened to me. This strange feeling followed me as long as I came out on the west side of the NP - after loosing my wrist watch, almost loosing second sledge, being twice buried with my tent underneath of snow in blizzard, and got stuck in storm for 4 days. I have never been before neither after felt such a claustrophobic fear to be buried alive.
